SET is an electronic commerce protocol for secure payment card transactions over the Internet developed by Visa, MasterCard and their technology partners.

The First U.S. SET Pilot and First Live, U.S. SET Secure Payment Card Purchase Transaction was Conducted at The Wal-Mart Online Store on June 2, 1997.


The solution was developed By GlobeSet, Wal-Mart, American Express, and GTE. The first transaction consisted of an American Express Cardmember ordering, purchasing, and requesting shipment of a drill press at the Wal-Mart Online store (located at www.wal-mart.com) on the Internet and marked the successful introduction of live, SET transactions to the United States.
